May Brings Melon Mania to the Produce Department!

It's a great time of year to be a melon lover because melon season is upon us! We have perfectly ripe cantaloupe and seedless watermelon ready to devour! Look for a wide variety of luscious melons to phase in throughout the summer all the way to October. Not sure what you're looking for in a melon? Here are some tips on selecting the best of the best:

Cantaloupe

CANTALOUPE
Pick melons with a little bit of "give" that smell sweetly floral.

Honeydew

HONEYDEW
Pick waxy fruit that yields under gentle pressure.

SEEDLESS WATERMELON
Seedless Watermelon – Look for firm, heavy melons without cracks.

PERSIAN
Persians may be green or gold skinned, with a salmon-colored flesh. They look like a super-sized cantaloupe. Pick as you would a cantaloupe.

Canary Melon

CANARY MELON
Shaped like a football, these are bright yellow (like a canary) outside with a pink-tinged white flesh inside. They should be slightly soft on the ends.

Casaba Melon

CASABA MELON
Look for yellow rind on this globe-shaped fruit, and pick melons that have a softish spot on the end.

Crenshaw Melon

CRENSHAW MELON
This fruit is oval-shaped with a ribbed, yellow rind tinged with green. When ripe they will soften on the larger end and smell faintly sweet.

ORANGE FLESH
These oval, smooth, yellow melons have a light orange flesh. The skin will feel a touch oily when it's ripe.

SHARLYN
The netted rind of this fruit is greenish or orange, and the flesh is white tinged with orange. Look for light orange fruits that are slightly soft.

Santa Claus Melon

SANTA CLAUS MELON
These watermelon-shaped fruits have a beautiful deep green rind streaked with gold. Look for slightly soft melons.
