Pedaling Great Coffee: The Mission of Peace
Posted: Thursday, August 1, 2013
Peace Coffee has been proudly roasting, brewing and pedaling (no, not peddling – we mean bicycles!) outstanding fair trade and organic coffee in the heart of south Minneapolis since 1996! Peace Coffee's mission is to make exceptional-tasting, organic fair-trade coffee that sustains the livelihoods of the people who grow, roast and sell it; preserves and protects the environment that produces it; and delights the taste buds of those who drink it.
Peace Coffee was created by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) in collaboration with a group of Mexican coffee farmers at a time when fair trade certification hadn't yet become known in the U.S. Since then, the coffee business had changed dramatically, but what hasn't is Peace's commitment to coffee farmers and to innovation in the coffee trade. Peace buys only organic coffee at a premium price, as they place a high value on their producer-partners' land stewardship. While many companies source their beans through brokers, Peace continues to directly source their beans from the farmers who grow them, at fair prices. Where economics, location and inequities in land distribution have historically left more than half of the world's coffee farmers at the whims of local traders (compelling them to sell their beans for whatever price was offered), fair trade cooperatives offer powerful economies of scale for these otherwise marginalized producers. In communities where basic services can be rudimentary to nonexistent, such co-ops may even provide clinics, schools and more.
The Peace Roastery in Minneapolis is a "green" building that features geothermal heating, a rooftop garden, an array of solar panels and much more. In their ongoing commitment to protection of the environment, Peace delivers to local wholesale accounts by bicycle, or where that is not possible, by biodiesel-powered van. In addition, bike commuting by the Peace staff is encouraged, and Peace has been awarded the American League of Bicyclists' Silver Distinction Award for their commitment to two-wheeled transportation.
