Ten New Tastes to Try
Posted: Friday, August 1, 2014
There seems to be an endless parade of new tastes in our markets. It's all part and parcel to the Joy of Good Foods! Whether these items are new or maybe just new to you, they're worth checking out, and our Chef Rachael Perron is giving you a little insight as to why they're the flavors to savor now.
You don't have to wait for the State Fair to try these locally made frozen treats! They taste exactly like a bowl of fresh berries and cream, probably because that's what's in the Merry Mountain Berry and Summer Strawberry pops, my favorites. Looking for a mocha or craving something tropical? The Choco Latte and Coconut Pineapple Paradise flavors are righteous as well! Yummm-ME!
Salted Caramel Tiramisu
As if Desserts by Alighieri's locally made fresh tiramisu couldn't be richer and more decadent, it is now. The Salted Caramel is to die for, but my co-workers also loved the new Banana and Chai flavors. Find them in the Cake Case in the Bakery Department.
Stonewall Kitchen Butter Chicken Simmering Sauce
It's probably my family's favorite of the Indian simmer sauces (we also really like Tikka Masala and Rogan Josh), and Stonewall is a great brand. I love that this brand comes in a slightly bigger size than some of the other flavors available in the International Foods Aisle, because we like a little extra for dipping our naan into! It works as a simmer sauce, of course, but I like it poured hot right over some grilled butterflied chicken breasts, too. Find it in the Deli Department.
Kowalski's Fresh Basil Mozzarella
What a great idea! Our Fresh Mozzarella is hand-pulled right in-store with fresh basil right in the cheese! It is amazing on a grilled pizza! Find it in the Imported Cheese Department.
Kowalski's Green Salsa
A great new salsa option in the Grab & Go Section of the Deli, this has a smoother texture that's super for munching or mixing into a chicken enchilada filling. I like to use it in my recipe for Chilaquiles, too. And here's a super tip: it makes a fast and easy guacamole when you mix it into some smashed fresh avocado!
Jules Destrooper Butter Waffle Cookies
Now is the season for ice cream, and these cookies are absolutely the best for those times you really want a waffle cone but maybe not a whole one. These taste exactly like a waffle cone, but they're nice and small. They're perfect topped with a small scoop of ice cream and some fresh berries.
Kowalski's Soft Pretzels
The easiest snack or party food ever. I slice them up into rounds and serve them like chips with a choice of dipping sauces: 1) olive oil with balsamic, salt and pepper and 2) honey mustard. They vanish quickly! Find them in the Bakery Department.
Bare Fruit Apple Chips
Can't decide between a sweet snack and a crunchy one like a potato chip? Why choose? These tasty treats are lightly sweet and pack a nutritional punch with no post-potato chip guilt! Great for lakeside munching! Find them in the Grocery Department.
My husband begs for pasta all the time, even mid-summer when the thought of hot, filling pasta nearly repulses me. I satisfy his craving with a dish I call Rustic Italian Supper – a thick, toasted slice of Roasted Garlic Bread in a shallow dish of Kowalski's Garlic Marinara Pasta Sauce. I add one of these huge meatballs (find them in the Deli Department in the Grab & Go Section), a sunny-side up egg and a scoop of fresh ricotta. Drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled with fresh grated Parm, kosher salt, freshly cracked black peppercorns and basil leaves, this dish is delish!
Kowalski's Frozen Pizzas
I am a confessed pizza snob, and for years I'd never buy a frozen pizza unless it was to leave for a babysitter to feed my kids. Boy, have I changed my tune! Our new recipes are so incredibly good! I was genuinely shocked that a frozen pizza could look so beautiful (even frozen!) and taste so delicious. They're positively loaded with really creamy mozzarella and fresh, tasty toppings. I've got three in my freezer right now!
Selection and availability vary by market.
