Community Supported Agriculture: From Untiedt's Farm to Your Table

Kowalski's Markets and Untiedt's Vegetable Farm of Waverly, Minnesota, have been working together for years to offer customers fresh local produce during the Minnesota growing season. Since 2010, the two family-owned businesses have been taking that partnership one step further by offering customers the opportunity to be part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, with pickup options at each of our 11 Kowalski's Markets.

What is CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) consists of a group of people who pledge at the beginning of the season to support a farming operation. In return, they will receive a box of freshly harvested produce each week throughout the farming season. Buying into a CSA allows members to have a connection with a local farm and understand where and how their produce is grown. It also builds a relationship between the grower and consumer where both parties share in the farming risks and rewards.

For example, if frost bites the apple trees in April, the CSA box you receive may not be as apple-abundant in September. But when the weather conditions are ideal, the benefits are reflected in the box you receive each week.

How does it work?

The CSA program runs for 17 weeks, beginning in mid-June. Each week, members receive a box of freshly harvested produce from Untiedt's Vegetable Farm. Each box contains a minimum of seven different types of seasonal vegetables as well as one type of fruit. The produce contained in the box varies as the season progresses and different fruits and vegetables come into season. There is an option to purchase a mini share, which feeds a household of 2, or a family share, which feeds a household of 3-4. Untiedt's grows over 50 different crops that are included in the CSA boxes throughout the season.

FAQs

Q. What happens if I am not able to get to my pickup?
A. Unfortunately, we are not able to hold or credit shares. If you are going to miss a pickup, we recommend having someone else pick up your box. If your location needs to be changed for a week, we must be notified 48 hours in advance.

Q. Can I select which items I would like to receive?
A. No. All shares are packaged alike.

Q. Will I always have food in my CSA box even if the season doesn't cooperate?
A. Yes, there just might not be as much of a certain item. Untiedt's works hard to guarantee that your boxes will always contain a minimum of 7-8 different items each week.

Q. Can I visit the farm?
A. Yes! There are a few farm events each season. CSA members are encouraged to attend and learn about the farm and their growing practices. Untiedt's Vegetable Farm is located 45 minutes outside the Twin Cities in Waverly, Minnesota. Open house dates will be added to their website throughout the growing season. Be sure to check out their calendar at untiedts.com.
