Give Mom the Royal Treatment
Tea is a traditional, cultural and tasteful event celebrated throughout Great Britain. There are a number of variations on the tradition, including cream tea, high tea and elevenses, each distinctly different.
Afternoon tea is sometimes called low tea because it's usually enjoyed at a low table, like a coffee table in the living room. Though it takes place in a somewhat relaxed setting, it's considered a formal, refined experience. It's a lovely way to celebrate a special occasion such as a bridal shower, baby shower or birthday and is a charming choice for an intimate Mother's Day gathering.
As the name suggests, afternoon tea is served between lunch and dinner. Since the affair revolves around tea, it's best to offer a variety of selections, including a decaffeinated option for those who prefer it. In terms of flavor profile, black teas are a natural fit for most traditional tea foods. English breakfast tea is a robust, full-bodied choice, while Darjeeling offers a lighter body and a milder, more delicate flavor. Earl Grey is a bolder black tea, distinguished by its pronounced aroma from bergamot oil.
Afternoon tea celebrates both sweet and savory foods, perhaps six to nine small portions per person. It's traditionally served in courses, starting from the bottom of a tiered tray and working upward.
First Course
A savory opening course typically consists of dainty crustless finger sandwiches and other finger foods like deviled eggs. Some of our favorite sandwich fillings include smoked salmon spread; thinly sliced peeled English cucumber with herbed cream cheese; chicken salad; and pimento cheese spread.
Second Course
A classic second course offers a selection of scones served with jam and clotted cream (or substitute mascarpone cheese), available in the Specialty Cheese Department. Look for mini scones in the Bakery Department or try our line of frozen pastries in the Bake at Home Freezer Case.
Third Course
A tea's final course may include bite-size cookies, meringues, cakes or other petite pastries. We especially love French macarons and mini fruit tarts. You can find a beautiful and scrumptious variety to choose from in the Pastry Case.
Sesame Cookies
Homemade Sesame Cookies would make a great addition to your third course. Sweet and slightly nutty, this twist on Italian sesame cookies features brown sugar for added depth. They're rolled in sesame seeds before baking, creating a crisp exterior and a tender, chewy center. It's the perfect lightly sweet treat!
