Granola Two Ways
Savory granola is having a moment. Aside from being a low-sugar snack, its crunchy texture makes it a versatile enhancement for dishes like soup, salad (à la croutons) or even avocado toast. Here we’re offering up our favorite savory recipe along with a low-sugar option that’s great anywhere or anytime you’d reach for a more traditional sweet selection.
Making an Informed Choice
While it can be a healthful part of your diet, granola may be high in added sugar and total fat. Making your own at home can be a great way to control its nutritional value. If you’re buying packaged granola, it’s worth taking a look at the Nutrition Facts panel and ingredient list to find one that meets your particular dietary needs and goals. Look for products that contain 100% whole grain or list a whole grain as the first ingredient. Here are some other tips on what to look for, assuming at least a serving size of ⅓ cup:
- Fiber – 3g or more per serving is preferable.
- Sugar – 6g or less of added sugar, or less than 25% of calories from added sugars is ideal.
- Protein – 5g per serving from a natural food source such as nuts, seeds or protein-rich grains like quinoa is best.
- Fat – Look for healthy sources like nuts, seeds and certain oils (such as olive or avocado), ensuring total fat per serving is less than 20% of the Daily Value.
